Fahmy, Hicham
Biography:
Hicham Fahmy was born in Egypt on September 12, 1958. He studied Philosophy at the Ain- Shams University at Kairo and moved to Germany in 1992. Since 1996, he is a German citizen. Between 2007 and 2011 he studied painting at the Academy for Painting in Berlin in the class of Ute Wöllmann. He became her “master student” in 2011. Simultaneously he was from 2011 until 2012 appointed visiting lecturer at the Academy for Painting in Berlin. He lives and works as artist in Germany and Fuerteventura.
Hicham Fahmy´s art deliberately opposes all those negative impulses that cast a shadow over our daily modern lives. In a way, it is an art with a “tongue in cheek” that transports happiness and optimism while at the same time it also stands for justice and peace between cultures. Thus his art intends to build bridges, which directly influence our lives. One source of inspiration is the beautiful island of Fuerteventura, its landscape, the flora and fauna, and especially its bird world. However, the artist has no interest in rendering a realistic reproduction of what he sees. Depicting his joyful figures, he rather wants to record the kind of pleasure which he draws from the many observations he makes on the island. Thus he creates scenes with highly reduced imaginary bird figures from memories and imbues them with a strong dose of inventiveness as if they were protagonists of a comedy or a dance Performance.
His artistic oeuvre includes painting, graphical design and objects. His experimental works follow a minimalistic idiom. For his prints, he has invented a special technique without using chemicals at all.
Hicham Fahmy has shown his works in many exhibitions worldwide. LDXArtodrome gallery has been representing him internationally.
